5 Kansai Deep Tech Startups Pitch in Public

Five Kansai-based deep tech startups pitched their ventures in fusion energy, regenerative medicine, photochemistry, biotech, and wave power — before judges Junko Takeuchi, Hiroaki Miyata, and Madoka Sawa.

• Takeuchi noted that by 2030, AI power demand could match Japan’s entire national electricity consumption
• Of 29 million Expo 2025 Osaka visitors, roughly 70% were Osaka Prefecture residents; many season-pass holders visited more than 10 times
• EX-Fusion (Yoshihiro Naruse): developing laser fusion while generating early revenue from high-power laser processing equipment
• Solaris Bio (Kaku Ishikawa): developing the world’s first alternative cryopreservation formulation that eliminates toxic conventional cryoprotectants
• Light On-Demand Chemical (Akihiko Tsuda): uses light to generate biologically derived phosgene from methane in livestock biogas — 15 years of Kobe University research
• Mee Bio (Tateyoshi Hayamizu): Tokyo University spinout using photoswitch proteins to produce petroleum-derived aromatics from biomass at low cost; positions oil independence as a national strategy
• Yellow Duck (Shigeo Nakayama): floating wave power units, 3 m in diameter, each powering a four-person household; a 2 km² array is planned to generate roughly the equivalent of one nuclear reactor
