Tesla is recalling its cheaper Cybertruck because the wheels might fall off
Tesla is recalling all 173 RWD Cybertruck Long Range units after brake rotor stud holes may crack, letting the wheel stud separate from the hub. The fix is free, and Tesla says it knows of 3 warranty claims, not collisions or injuries.
What Matters
- Tesla’s notice says higher-severity road perturbations and cornering can strain the rotor stud hole.
- The affected trucks are the $70,000 RWD model with 18-inch steel wheels.
- Tesla will replace front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts at no charge.
- This is the 11th Cybertruck recall, after issues with the accelerator, trim, inverter, reverse cameras, and font size.
- Tesla launched the RWD Cybertruck in April, then discontinued it months later; a $60,000 AWD variant launched in February and is unaffected.
- [HN: @Robdel12] Calls out fragile hardware and says towing can total a Cybertruck by ripping out the frame at the hitch.
- [HN: @vablings] Notes the RWD model was sold only briefly, and questions why anyone would want a pure RWD electric truck.
