Tech bros optimized war… and it’s working
Fireship breaks down the Maven Smart System, the AI kill-chain platform now rolling out to all US military branches.
- Maven Smart System (MSS) is deploying across all US military branches — Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force — as of March 2026.
- Palantir (CEO Alex Karp) is the core platform provider; AWS, Azure, and OpenAI are also involved; Google pulled out after employee protests.
- Anthropic’s Claude was previously the LLM of choice but was banned from government contracts after Dario Amodei objected to lethal use cases.
- OpenAI stepped in to replace Anthropic after the ban.
- Palantir’s proprietary ‘ontology’ maps fragmented battlefield data into a graph structure (Neo4j-style) capturing relationships between people, vehicles, and assets.
- The inferred open-source stack: Apache Kafka for data ingestion, Apache Spark for processing, OpenCV for drone-footage object detection, Open Policy Agent for rules enforcement, and MCP for agent orchestration.
- A human is still required to authorize lethal action today, but the system is architected to eventually support fully autonomous targeting.
